Slips, Trips, and Falls in the Workplace; and how to Avoid them

December 28, 2009

Slips, trips, and falls in the workplace are no laughing matter and they happen more frequently then you might imagine.Slipping--Tripping-Signs

According to Andrew Miller, EHS Program Coordinator at Emedco: “While statistics show that 80 percent of slips occur in the parking lot area due to winter weather, there are still a great deal that occur inside the workplace due to wet floors and other potential hazards.”

Mr. Miller goes on to say, “It should be obvious that conditions such as snow and ice being on the ground are going to increase the risk of slips, and falls, but it is still worth mentioning that you should take extra care while walking outside and while the snow is on the ground during the winter months you should take precautions such as the proper foot wear and just simply watching your step; or rather where it is you are stepping.”

Emedco offers a wide variety of products all geared towards stopping slips, trips, and falls in their tracks and help keep your safety record intact. But there are also less obvious places where you can see an increase in slips, trips, and falls and these products can help to eliminate these risks greatly:

Grit Strips: Grit strips are perfect for hallways, stairs, and walkways. Since they come in packs of fifty there are plenty to go around and each strip is made up of a high coarse grip material that can be stuck anywhere to help keep your feet on the ground and you off of it. You can even get grit strips that are colored black and yellow to show a visual warning or get glow in the dark grit strips that will be seen even if the lighting is low.

Barricade Tapes: Sometimes it is not enough to set out some barricades and think that people will stay out of the potentially hazardous areas. An unsuspecting employee or visitor who may not be paying attention could potentially walk right into an area that is known by you to be slippery but not known by them. Avoid this by complimenting your barricades with any number of different barricade tapes that are available. You can get them in a number of different colors and choose the message you want on the tape such as, “Danger’” or “Caution.” The added visual can help you to avoid a needless slip and fall.

Warning Tapes: These types of tapes come in black and yellow coloring and actually warn about a potential slip, trip, or fall hazard while providing extra grip with their course grit that can be stuck just about anywhere. Perfect for an emergency situation that crops up in the workplace.

According to OSHA, over 37 percent of all work related accidents are slips, trips, and falls. While that may not sound like a lot, that equates to 313,335 work related accidents that require time off each and every year.

The good news is that you do not have to let your business fall victim to these statistics. Working with Emedco and utilizing their products to help lessen the likelihood of slips, trips, and falls at your business will not only help to keep your safety record in good standing, but it will also help to keep your employees and visitors safe as well.
