Did you know every day over 800,000 trucks are transporting hazardous materials (hazmat), reported by 
Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. This year it’s estimated that of 2 million tractor trailers will transport goods over 450 billion miles. Now that’s a lot of driving!
In fact, in 20
10 the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) & the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) reported:
• 112,379 Large Trucks Involved in Non-Fatal Crashes
• 2,559 Large Trucks Involved in Hazmat (HM) Placard Crashes
As you probably know placards have numbers on them notifying every one of the dangerous chemicals that are being transported. The following is a listing of the Classes of DOT Placards.
• Class 1 – Explosives
• Class 2 – Hazardous/Compressed Gases
• Class 3 – Flammable Liquids
• Class 4 – Flammable Solids
• Class 5 – Organic Peroxide
• Class 6 – Poison / Toxic
• Class 7 – Radioactive Materials
• Class 8 – Corrosive
• Class 9 – Miscellaneous Goods
Stay in compliance (Title 49) with placards & DOT Flip Placard Systems. DOT requires placards be used to ensure safety when transporting hazardous materials.
