Mining Site

Mining sites can be dangerous! Protect yourself with the right mining safety equipment.

Mine safety is indeed the industry’s #1 priority, as indicated in the 2012 Worldwide Mining Survey.

Ventyx, an industrial software company and subsidiary of ABB, questioned representatives from 374 mining companies from all around the globe. When asked about the leading challenges faced by their companies, 31% put ensuring workforce safety on the topmost spot, followed by managing capital projects and maximizing production effectiveness.

The results are not entirely surprising. This is the second time in three years that workforce safety has claimed the top spot of miners’ priorities. This only goes to show that the mining community is strongly focused on safety. The thousands of safety-first labels, signs, and posters dominating most mining sites and facilities worldwide is evidence of this. (more…)

When it rains, it pours, and it is indeed pouring wildly over the East Coast as Hurricane Sandy continues to bring torrential rains, strong winds, and massive flooding on both coastal and inland areas.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane, is ravaging the country’s most populous region with winds and rains of enormous proportions. In fact, according to MailOnline, just the size of Sandy is enough for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to call it a “frankenstorm.”

The behemoth hurricane is running up the Atlantic on a collision course with two other weather systems: a strong northeaster and a jet stream to the west. If that’s not enough, there is also the full moon on Monday that will add two to three inches to the storm surge. As many meteorologists and forecasters put it, Sandy is bound to go down as the largest and most devastating hurricane in American history. (more…)

Sock it to Spills

June 15, 2011

A Spill Sock is a type of absorbent which is utilized primarily for diking and molding around spills. What exactly does a spill sock do? It soaks up the liquid and locks it away, keeping it safely inside the sock. In essence it contains a spill by isolating it from spreading over your entire shop floor. Also, a Spill Sock can easily fit between machines and around floor spills to keep them from leaking out into other areas of the shop or factory. Did you know most common spills are ink and chemical in labs and production environments? Now you do.

Types of Spill Socks: •

  • General Purpose/Universal- For everyday use – quickly soaks up spills.
  • Hazmat- extremely effective at absorbing harsh chemicals quickly. Soaks up Chemicals such as: hydrofluoric, sulfuric, nitric, phosphoric, hydrochloric acids and other harsh chemicals; provides superior performance without degradation.
  • Oil absorbent- Repels water while soaking up the oil. Used to soak up diesel and crude oil & gasoline. Also great for removing oil from vats & troughs.
  • Green Socks- Earth Friendly socks that are made from post-consumer recycled newsprint and cellulose material. Perfect for Soaking up hydrocarbons, water or petroleum based liquids.
  • Corn Cob- Economical & mold easily into tights or awkward areas.

To ensure safety, prevent spills by first keeping socks around machines, pipes & waste streams. If a spill occurs, alert authorized personnel and contain the spill. If a chemical is spilled, always read the MSDS and follow any specific directions. Once the spill is cleaned up be sure to place warning signs so there are not any falls as the area may still be slippery.

By incorporating Spill Socks into your facility’s spill cleanup system, you will discover an easy and versatile way to sock it to your spills!
